The longest recorded piece of graffiti was painted by a student in the toilets of his college at Changsha, China in 1915.It consisted of over 4000 characters criticising his teachers and the state of Chinese society. After completing his masterpiece the student handed himself in and was paraded in front of the school and threatened with expulsion. The student was a 22 year old Chairman Mao. A graffiti artist who later founded the Peoples Republic of China and was responsible for the deaths of over 30 million people.

After testing her baby language theory on more than 1,000 infants around the world, Priscilla says there are five words that all babies 0–3 months old say—regardless of race and culture:

Those "words" are actually sound reflexes, Priscilla says. "Babies all around the world have the same reflexes, and they therefore make the same sounds," she says. If parents don't respond to those reflexes, Priscilla says the baby will eventually stop using them.

Priscilla recommends that parents listen for those words in a baby's pre-cry before they start crying hysterically. She says there is no one sound that's harder to hear than others because it varies by individual. She also says some babies use some words more than others.

Impeach for Peace, a Minnesota-based impeachment group, has researched a method for impeaching the president using a little known and rarely used part of the Rules of the House of Representatives ("Jefferson’s Manual"). This document actually empowers individual citizens to initiate the impeachment process themselves.

"Jefferson's Manual" is an interpretive guide to parliamentary procedure, and is included (along with the Constitution) in the bound volumes of the Rules of the House of Representatives. It is ratified by each congress (including the current one), and has been updated continuously through the history of our democracy. The section covering impeachment lists the acceptable vehicles for bringing impeachment motions to the floor of the House.

Before the House Judiciary Committee can put together the Articles of Impeachment, someone must initiate the impeachment procedure. Most often, this occurs when members of the House pass a resolution. Another method outlined in the manual, however, is for individual citizens to submit a memorial for impeachment.

After learning this information, Minnesotan and Impeach for Peace member (Jodin Morey) found precedent in an 1826 memorial by Luke Edward Lawless which had been successful in initiating the impeachment of Federal Judge James H. Peck. Impeach for Peace then used this as a template for their "Do-It-Yourself Impeachment." Now any citizen can download the DIY Impeachment Memorial and submit it, making it possible for Americans to do what our representatives have been unwilling to do. The idea is for so many people to submit the Memorial that it cannot be ignored.

Feel free to download it, print out TWO copies, fill in your relevant information in the blanks (name, State, notary is optional), and send in a letter today. We're sending this wave in to Republican House Rep. Ron Paul who has spoken in favor of impeachment. There's also extra credit for sending a DIY Impeachment to your own representative.

Hold on to the other copy of the letter until March 20th, when we're having everyone send them in (Next wave in June will target a supportive Democrat).

That's right — to make a big impact, we're having everyone send it in on the same date (Over 500,000 downloads so far representing over 1.5 million mailings). We hope to flood the congress with sacks of mail and cause a newsworthy event to further pressure them to act on the memorials. Although, it's important to keep in mind that in the 1830 precedent, impeachment resulted as a result of a single memorial. Yours might be the one.

Jefferson's Manual

Jefferson's Manual is a sort of interpretive guide to parliamentary procedure, and is included (along with the Constitution) in the bound volumes of the Rules of the House of Representatives. It is ratified by each congress (including the current one), and has been updated continuously through the history of our democracy.
Within the Manual itself, the section covering impeachment is designated Section LIII. Section 603 refers to the section of the entire volume (including the Constitution and Rules) in which you'll find the listing of acceptable vehicles for bringing impeachment motions to the floor. The second vehicle being of most interest to our method. It reads:

"In the House of Representatives there are various methods of setting an impeachment in motion: by charges made on the floor on the responsibility of a Member or Delegate (II, 1303; III, 2342, 2400, 2469; VI, 525, 526, 528, 535, 536); by charges preferred by a memorial, which is usually referred to a committee for examination (III, 2364, 2491, 2494, 2496, 2499, 2515; VI, 552); or by a resolution dropped in the hopper by a Member and referred to a committee (April 15, 1970, p. 11941-2); by a message from the President (III, 2294, 2319; VI, 498); by charges transmitted from the legislature of a State (III, 2469) or Territory (III, 2487) or from a grand jury (III, 2488); or from facts developed and reported by an investigating committee of the House (III, 2399, 2444)."

While some of these words are no longer used in our everyday speech, here are the important bolded words above to understand.

Memorial: "a written statement of facts accompanying a petition presented to somebody in authority"

Preferred: "to make a charge against somebody by submitting details of the alleged offense to a court, magistrate, or judge for examination, or prosecute such a charge"

Peck and contempt (care of policyreview.org)

There is the case of Judge James H. Peck, an 1830-31 impeachment and acquittal. President Monroe had appointed Peck to the bench in 1822. In 1828, the Democrats swept to power. That met the condition for partisan conflict.

Peck was judge in Missouri in a series of land claim cases in the territory of the Louisiana purchase. The law was complicated, the interests involved huge. In the first such case, in 1825 (the account here draws mainly on Bushnell’s in Crimes, Follies, and Misfortunes), Peck ruled against the client of a lawyer named Luke Edward Lawless. Because of the high degree of interest in the case, Peck published his ruling in a St. Louis newspaper in 1826. Shortly thereafter, a detailed rebuttal of Peck’s ruling appeared in another newspaper under the byline, "A Citizen." Peck was furious at the attack. He believed the "Citizen" rebuttal, in addition to its flawed legal reasoning, was replete with errors and misrepresentations of his ruling. Lawless’s authorship soon became known.

Bushnell writes:
Peck held the letter to be a contempt of court, sentenced Lawless to twenty-four hours in jail, and suspended him from practicing in federal court for eighteen months [a serious blow to Lawless’s livelihood as a lawyer specializing in land claims before the federal courts]. As the basis of the contempt ruling, Peck found that Lawless acted "with intent to impair the public confidence in the upright intentions of said court, and to bring odium upon the court, and especially with intent to impress the public mind, and particularly many litigants in this court, that they are not to expect justice in the cases now pending therein."

Lawless felt he was entirely within his rights to criticize a published decision and saw the contempt ruling as a tyrannical affront to the Constitution. He began a long crusade against Peck that ultimately led to impeachment nearly five years later on one article dealing solely with the judge’s treatment of Lawless. The article accused Peck of acting "to the great disparagement of public justice, the abuse of judicial authority, and to the subversion of the liberties of the people of the United States." James Buchanan, who went on to be elected president in 1856, was chairman of the House managers.

Peck maintained that his contempt ruling was within his powers as a judge, and his defenders argued that even if it went too far, Peck did not, as the article alleged, act with bad intent, believing that he possessed sufficient authority for his actions. At a minimum, however, it seems fair to say that Peck’s actions from the bench were harsh enough to meet the test of genuinely dubious conduct.

Peck was acquitted with 21 votes in favor of removal and 22 against. Where was the abuse of the separation of powers here? In this case, not in the statute books but in the common law — the precedents Peck relied on to hold Lawless in contempt and to sentence him harshly. As Bushnell observes, Peck’s defenders "sought to refute the charge of abuse of the contempt power by citing English and American precedents supporting the authority of courts to punish for contempts like Lawless’s." The House tried to hold his conduct to the standard of its more circumscribed view of judicial contempt powers. The Senate was not willing to rely on the House’s assertions to the extent necessary to remove Peck.

But the Senate, like the House, can hardly be said to have found Peck’s conduct salutary. Both chambers amply demonstrated this by approving, within a month of Peck’s acquittal, legislation introduced by Buchanan restricting contempt findings in federal courts roughly along the lines of the terms the House managers had unsuccessfully tried to apply in Peck’s impeachment. Contempt could be found in misbehavior in a courtroom or close enough to it to disturb its proceedings; or in misbehavior in such business of the courts’ as filing motions and briefs; or in the failure to obey a lawful court order. It could not be found in a newspaper rebuttal to a court’s decision. Buchanan’s legislation governs contempts in federal courts to this day.

3. If a <> Member, Delegate, or Resident Commissioner has a petition, memorial, or private bill to present, he shall endorse his name, deliver it to the Clerk, and may specify the reference or disposition to be made thereof. Such petition, memorial, or private bill (except when judged by the Speaker to be obscene or insulting) shall be entered on the Journal with the name of the Member, Delegate, or Resident Commissioner presenting it and shall be printed in the Congressional Record.

At the first organization of the House in 1789 the rules then adopted provided for the presentation of petitions to the House by the Speaker and Members, and for the introduction of bills by motion for leave. In 1842 it was found necessary, in order to save time, to provide that petitions and memorials should be filed with the Clerk. In 1870, 1879, and 1887 the practice as to petitions was extended to private bills, at first as to certain classes and later so that all should be filed with the Clerk (IV, 3312, 3365; VII, 1024). Before the House recodified its rules in the 106th Congress, this provision was found in former clause 1 of rule XXII (H. Res. 5, Jan. 6, 1999, p. 47).

Petitions, memorials, <> and other papers addressed to the House may be presented by the Speaker as well as by a Member (IV, 3312). Petitions from the country at large are presented by the Speaker in the manner prescribed by the rule (III, 2030; IV, 3318; VII, 1025). A Member may present a petition from the people of a State other than his own (IV, 3315, 3316). The House itself may refer one portion of a petition to one committee and another portion to another committee (IV, 3359, 3360), but ordinarily the reference of a petition does not come before the House itself. A committee may receive a petition only through the House (IV, 4557).

Tasting beers may seem simple to many: buy beer and drink it. However, there are an increasing number of people who understand that craft beers can be just as complex as some wines. Because so many brewers are starting to put more thought and effort into brewing beer, we as beer drinkers should also think more about what we taste when we drink beer.

Just like tasting wine, there are a few steps that one must go through to fully appreciate what one is consuming. There are many aspects to beer that makes it what it is - appearance, aroma, flavor, and body - and a beer enthusiast should be able to identify many traits of a beer within these components.

The following four steps aren’t that difficult to implement and can make your beer drinking experience a million times better, especially if you like to drink craft beers. On the contrary, these steps could quite possibly make you hate your favorite macrobrewery’s best offerings.

Observe
There are a few things to note when looking at a freshly poured beer. It is very important to pay attention to a beer’s color, clarity, and head retention. Knowing these characteristics of a beer can give you a pretty good foreshadowing of what the beer will be like when you actually taste it.

Disturb
This is obviously the easiest step but nonetheless important. By gently swirling the beer you can disturb it just enough to allow its aromas to be amplified for a moment. Before swirling your beer make sure you have your nose ready to do some analyzing.

Inhale
Many people don’t think of beer as aromatic (except once you’ve had a few too many and you begin sweating) but a beer’s smell is actually pretty important. When inhaling pay attention to whether the beer’s aroma is sweet, floral, spicy, or otherwise - these aromas often hint at what types of malts, hops, and yeasts were used and how it was brewed.

Taste
Obviously tasting the beer is the most fun and first impressions usually mean a lot, so do your best to get the most out of this step. It is important to figure out what is flavoring your beer so take notice to whether the beer is sweet, bitter, or balanced - do this by intentionally forcing the beer over your taste buds. Within a beer’s balance one can typically identify many sub-characteristics. Don’t forget to note what type of feel or texture the beer has. Along with a beer’s overall taste, body is probably one of the only things most people seem to care about, for example: America’s obsession with “light” beers. Much like a beer’s aromatic characteristics, the different parts to a beer’s taste can also tell you much about the beer’s ingredients and how the beer was made.

Hopefully these beer tasting methods will help the next time you drink a beer. I know that when I was first told about them around a year and a half ago I started noticing so much more about my favorite beers and especially beers I was trying for the first time. Once you have started using these four steps, you will eventually be able to break down each step even further, identifying more and more small details about the beer you are tasting. Portable computers can compete quite well against desktops in terms of performance, even at the high end, if you like your laptop heavy, but one area where they slip behind is graphics. Not any more, if ATI's Lasso can deliver what we think it can.

Fitting one, let alone two high end graphics cards into a laptop, and then powering them is, well... a bit of a bugger. What would be really cool is if the GPUs could be housed externally, interfacing with the laptop rather than residing within it. "But wait Steve, we've already seen such a solution" you shout, yes? Indeed the ASUS XG station strives to do that for lappies with ExpressCard slots. ATI's working on a little something of its own, however.

They're calling it Lasso and it'll go a bit further than having an external graphics card for a laptop. Lasso will be able to house multiple graphics boards providing what could frankly prove to be hilarious processing capabilities... and those of you keeping up with the GPGPU scene will know that it's not about games performance. Modern GPUs can do some serious general purpose wet-work, leaving the CPU cores to work on other things.

Details right now are scarce, but imagine having a pair of R600s plugged into your laptop, or indeed augmenting a small form factor PC, or a workstation...

ITIN Application

In order for Undocumented Immigrants to obtain financing with an ITIN Number, they must first Apply for an ITIN Number by filling out an ITIN Application. This ITIN Form is provided by the IRS as a way to collect taxes from immigrants working in the United States illegally.

Who Needs to Complete the ITIN Form?

The ITIN Application is for an individual who needs a US tax identification number, but is not eligible for a Social Security Number. Generally, you can get a Social Security Number ("SSN") if you are a US citizen, lawful permanent resident (green-card holder), or have a valid work permit.

Most "non-resident aliens" who have a tax connection with the United States need an ITIN Number. A non-resident alien is someone who is not a US citizen or resident. A "green-card" holder is a resident. Certain other people who spend a lot of time in the US are considered residents. These people will probably want to Apply for an ITIN Number.

There are many reasons you may want to fill out the ITIN Application. Here are some:

* An individual who needs to file a US income tax return, but does not qualify for an SSN needs to get an ITIN. For example, if you invested in US rental real estate (even if through a Canadian partnership), you need to file a return annually.

* If you invested in a US business, you need to file a US tax return, even if there were losses during the year.
Spouses and dependents need ITINs so that they can be claimed on the taxpayer’s US tax return. (Of course, spouses and dependents who can get their own SSNs don’t need ITINs).

* Sometimes a non-resident alien who dies owning US property. The estate often needs to file a US estate tax return, even if there is no tax. The estate needs an Employer Identification Number ("EIN"), not an ITIN. We can also process this application.

cd ~bob Change the current directory to the user bob's home directory (if you have permission).

Listing directory contents:

ls list a directory
ls -l list a directory in long ( detailed ) format

ls -a List the current directory including hidden files. Hidden files start
with "."
ls -ld * List all the file and directory names in the current directory using
long format. Without the "d" option, ls would list the contents
of any sub-directory of the current. With the "d" option, ls
just lists them like regular files.

Changing file permissions and attributes

chmod 755 file Changes the permissions of file to be rwx for the owner, and rx for
the group and the world. (7 = rwx = 111 binary. 5 = r-x = 101 binary)
chgrp user file Makes file belong to the group user.
chown cliff file Makes cliff the owner of file.
chown -R cliff dir Makes cliff the owner of dir and everything in its directory tree.

You must be the owner of the file/directory or be root before you can do any of these things.

Moving, renaming, and copying files:

cp file1 file2 copy a file
mv file1 newname move or rename a file
mv file1 ~/AAA/ move file1 into sub-directory AAA in your home directory.
rm file1 [file2 ...] remove or delete a file
rm -r dir1 [dir2...] recursivly remove a directory and its contents BE CAREFUL!
mkdir dir1 [dir2...] create directories
mkdir -p dirpath create the directory dirpath, including all implied directories in the path.
rmdir dir1 [dir2...] remove an empty directory

Viewing and editing files:

cat filename Dump a file to the screen in ascii.
more filename Progressively dump a file to the screen: ENTER = one line down
SPACEBAR = page down q=quit
less filename Like more, but you can use Page-Up too. Not on all systems.
vi filename Edit a file using the vi editor. All UNIX systems will have vi in some form.
emacs filename Edit a file using the emacs editor. Not all systems will have emacs.
head filename Show the first few lines of a file.
head -n filename Show the first n lines of a file.
tail filename Show the last few lines of a file.
tail -n filename Show the last n lines of a file.

Shells

The behavior of the command line interface will differ slightly depending
on the shell program that is being used.

Depending on the shell used, some extra behaviors can be quite nifty.

You can find out what shell you are using by the command:

echo $SHELL

Of course you can create a file with a list of shell commands and execute it like
a program to perform a task. This is called a shell script. This is in fact the
primary purpose of most shells, not the interactive command line behavior.

Environment variables

You can teach your shell to remember things for later using environment variables.
For example under the bash shell:

export CASROOT=/usr/local/CAS3.0 Defines the variable CASROOT with the value
/usr/local/CAS3.0.
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$CASROOT/Linux/lib Defines the variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH with
the value of CASROOT with /Linux/lib appended,
or /usr/local/CAS3.0/Linux/lib

By prefixing $ to the variable name, you can evaluate it in any command:

cd $CASROOT Changes your present working directory to the value of CASROOT

echo $CASROOT Prints out the value of CASROOT, or /usr/local/CAS3.0
printenv CASROOT Does the same thing in bash and some other shells.

Interactive History

A feature of bash and tcsh (and sometimes others) you can use
the up-arrow keys to access your previous commands, edit
them, and re-execute them.

Filename Completion

A feature of bash and tcsh (and possibly others) you can use the
TAB key to complete a partially typed filename. For example if you
have a file called constantine-monks-and-willy-wonka.txt in your
directory and want to edit it you can type 'vi const', hit the TAB key,
and the shell will fill in the rest of the name for you (provided the
completion is unique).

Bash is the way cool shell.

Bash will even complete the name of commands and environment variables.
And if there are multiple completions, if you hit TAB twice bash will show
you all the completions. Bash is the default user shell for most Linux systems.

Redirection:

grep string filename > newfile Redirects the output of the above grep
command to a file 'newfile'.
grep string filename >> existfile Appends the output of the grep command
to the end of 'existfile'.

The redirection directives, > and >> can be used on the output of most commands
to direct their output to a file.

Pipes:

The pipe symbol "|" is used to direct the output of one command to the input
of another.

For example:

ls -l | more This commands takes the output of the long format directory list command
"ls -l" and pipes it through the more command (also known as a filter).
In this case a very long list of files can be viewed a page at a time.

du -sc * | sort -n | tail
The command "du -sc" lists the sizes of all files and directories in the
current working directory. That is piped through "sort -n" which orders the
output from smallest to largest size. Finally, that output is piped through "tail"
which displays only the last few (which just happen to be the largest) results.

Command Substitution

You can use the output of one command as an input to another command in another way
called command substitution. Command substitution is invoked when by enclosing the
substituted command in backwards single quotes. For example:

cat `find . -name aaa.txt`

which will cat ( dump to the screen ) all the files named aaa.txt that exist in the current
directory or in any subdirectory tree.

Searching for strings in files: The grep command

grep string filename prints all the lines in a file that contain the string

Searching for files : The find command

find search_path -name filename

find . -name aaa.txt Finds all the files named aaa.txt in the current directory or
any subdirectory tree.
find / -name vimrc Find all the files named 'vimrc' anywhere on the system.
find /usr/local/games -name "*xpilot*"
Find all files whose names contain the string 'xpilot' which
exist within the '/usr/local/games' directory tree.

Reading and writing tapes, backups, and archives: The tar command

The tar command stands for "tape archive". It is the "standard" way to read
and write archives (collections of files and whole directory trees).

Often you will find archives of stuff with names like stuff.tar, or stuff.tar.gz. This
is stuff in a tar archive, and stuff in a tar archive which has been compressed using the
gzip compression program respectivly.

Chances are that if someone gives you a tape written on a UNIX system, it will be in tar format,
and you will use tar (and your tape drive) to read it.

Likewise, if you want to write a tape to give to someone else, you should probably use
tar as well.

Tar examples:

tar xv Extracts (x) files from the default tape drive while listing (v = verbose)
the file names to the screen.
tar tv Lists the files from the default tape device without extracting them.
tar cv file1 file2
Write files 'file1' and 'file2' to the default tape device.
tar cvf archive.tar file1 [file2...]
Create a tar archive as a file "archive.tar" containing file1,
file2...etc.
tar xvf archive.tar extract from the archive file
tar cvfz archive.tar.gz dname
Create a gzip compressed tar archive containing everything in the directory
'dname'. This does not work with all versions of tar.
tar xvfz archive.tar.gz
Extract a gzip compressed tar archive. Does not work with all versions of tar.
tar cvfI archive.tar.bz2 dname
Create a bz2 compressed tar archive. Does not work with all versions of tar

File compression: compress, gzip, and bzip2

The standard UNIX compression commands are compress and uncompress. Compressed files have
a suffix .Z added to their name. For example:

compress part.igs Creates a compressed file part.igs.Z

uncompress part.igs Uncompresseis part.igs from the compressed file part.igs.Z.
Note the .Z is not required.

Another common compression utility is gzip (and gunzip). These are the GNU compress and
uncompress utilities. gzip usually gives better compression than standard compress,
but may not be installed on all systems. The suffix for gzipped files is .gz

gzip part.igs Creates a compressed file part.igs.gz
gunzip part.igs Extracts the original file from part.igs.gz

The bzip2 utility has (in general) even better compression than gzip, but at the cost of longer
times to compress and uncompress the files. It is not as common a utility as gzip, but is
becoming more generally available.

bzip2 part.igs Create a compressed Iges file part.igs.bz2
bunzip2 part.igs.bz2 Uncompress the compressed iges file.

Looking for help: The man and apropos commands

Most of the commands have a manual page which give sometimes useful, often more or less
detailed, sometimes cryptic and unfathomable discriptions of their usage. Some say they
are called man pages because they are only for real men.

Example:

man ls Shows the manual page for the ls command

You can search through the man pages using apropos

Example:

apropos build Shows a list of all the man pages whose discriptions contain the word "build"

Do a man apropos for detailed help on apropos.

These and other "special characters" (like the forward slash) can be "escaped" with \
i.e to match the string "/usr/STRIM100/SOFT" say "\/usr\/STRIM100\/SOFT"

Examples:

:1,$:s/dog/cat/g Substitute 'cat' for 'dog', every instance
for the entire file - lines 1 to $ (end of file)

:23,25:/frog/bird/ Substitute 'bird' for 'frog' on lines
23 through 25. Only the first instance
on each line is substituted.

Saving and quitting and other "ex" commands

These commands are all prefixed by pressing colon (:) and then entered in the lower
left corner of the window. They are called "ex" commands because they are commands
of the ex text editor - the precursor line editor to the screen editor
vi. You cannot enter an "ex" command when you are in an edit mode (typing text onto the screen)
Press to exit from an editing mode.

:w Write the current file.
:w new.file Write the file to the name 'new.file'.
:w! existing.file Overwrite an existing file with the file currently being edited.
:wq Write the file and quit.
:q Quit.
:q! Quit with no changes.

:e filename Open the file 'filename' for editing.

:set number Turns on line numbering
:set nonumber Turns off line numbering

Army Developing A Paralysis Beam

The U.S. Army is working on a modified 7.5-million-candlepower strobe light in hopes of creating a paralysis beam.

Although details are sketchy, it appears that U.S. government acquisition records call for contractor Peak Systems to ...

"...design and fabricate a light-based immobilisation system/deterrent device and integrate it with an unmanned aerial system. This will include any necessary medical research on frequency and amplitude modulation of high-intensity light that will cause immobilisation to all those within the beam."

The Peak Beam Systems device can apparently be pulsed with a strobe effect that has some effect on the human nervous system. The Maxa Beam shown above has quite a range, too. It can illuminate targets as far as 1.5 miles away.

The Maxa Beam is small enough to be hand-held, which is a vital factor in the US Army's selection of the device. The ultimate goal is to mount the device on a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) for crowd-control.

The idea of a paralysis beam is an old science fiction favorite. A early version can be found in the excellent 1958 novel The Mechanical Monarch, by E.C. Tubb. In the story, the para-beam is also installed on a roaming device - the frightful metamen:

Curt skidded to a halt, staring wildly at the advancing figure of the metaman, and darted to one side.
Blue fire streamed through the air where he had stood a moment before. It swung, lifted and Curt felt his legs go numb and almost lifeless as the blue ray stabbed past him, missing him by a fraction.
...Again the blue ray sent coldness through him, slowing his reflexes and chilling his blood with the touch of paralysis...

I also recall Robert Heinlein using the idea in his earlier 1940 story Methuselah's Children; in that story, he described paralysis bombs that delivered a paralyzing beam when set off.

This device also may remind fans of classic Star Trek of a device that appeared in the 1965 episode Dagger of the Mind - the neural neutralizer.

Want to outsmart an illegal sales tactic and save boo coos of money on your next big screen television?

How about trimming hundreds of dollars off the price of a computer monitor, or a speaker system?

The consumer can make age-old sales tactics at Best Buy, Circuit City and Fry’s work in their favor. We can exploit an illegal practice still prevalent in schemes run by corrupt management practices.

It’s easy actually, and you can save hundreds of dollars on major purchases. I will now outline a proven method that works at most electronics stores.

First, allow me to explain the exploit. Salespeople at Best Buy and Circuit City do not make commission. Nothing. However, upper management oftentimes will receive perks on their bonus. One of the ways corporations reward management is the sale of extended warranties. It’s common to see in-store warranties yield as much as a 70% profit margin. Over-zealous supervisors apply the same pressure applied to them to their store’s line-level employees.

They feel pressure to meet quotas, not only for bonuses, but also for promotion in the company. Some managers harass workers not capturing enough ‘cheese’, a term used for the service plans that return such ludicrous profits to the store.

It makes management look good.

It’s a fatter bonus.

A major topic in board meetings.

It’s the make or break factor that seals that promotion.

It’s the equivalent of super-sized ‘value’ meals at fast food franchises. The worker at the window doesn’t make commission, and yet they always ask, “Super-size that?”. It's corporate pressure that creates a "work force". But we already know that, right?

And that's when a remarkable, though little known, opportunity is presented to the consumer. I’ve personally skimmed $150 off the price of my last television, and most recently saved on my digital camcorder. This method works at many other places offering in-store insurance policies.

It’s not full proof, but a patient consumer can save bundles of cash.

When asked if you want the insurance, the five-year plan or the two-year plan, ask about the five-year. I know that can seem like the opposite of what we want to accomplish here, which is to save money. But when the electronics rep delivers his pitch on how fantastically thorough the five-year plan is, detailing the useless protections against this and that, tell him that sounds like the plan you need. Actually, go ahead and ask if there is an even longer, more expensive plan.

At this point, you’ll need to ask the price of such a fantastic plan, which turns out, is fantastically expensive. Here’s where we launch a counterattack of craftiness against this salesperson’s pitch. What he can’t do is lower the price of the store’s insurance policy. What he can do is lower the price of the television set. Yep. You read right. Salespeople can and will lower the price on inventory at places like Circuit City and Best Buy as long as it pleases management. This is called illegal bundling and it happens all the time. And yet the pressure of gaining ‘cheese’ from in-store warranties is great enough to trickle all the way down the standard operating platform. A supervisor is wide open to lowering the price of a product on one condition only. You get the extended warranty.

Well that’s nice, you say. But I don’t want the insurance, what about saving money?

Hopefully by this time you have talked either the rep or his supervisor into lowering the price substantially on the product itself. The bigger the service plan you want, the more 'cheese' for them, and the bigger the discount for you. When the rep wheels out your brand new big screen, they’ll carry out a carbon copy form. This is the insurance plan for you to fill out at the front desk. That’s right, not right then and there in front of the sales rep, but at the front desk, where a line of other customers stand.

We’re going to have a quick change of heart when we get to that cashier at that register. Simply tell the cashier handling your purchase, “You know, I think I’m going to hold off on the ten-year plan for now. Could I purchase it later if I decide to?” To which they’ll reply, “Of course. You have thirty days to change your mind.”

And there you have it: A major discount, should you suddenly change your mind about the warranty.

How to turn your body into a fat burning furnace

I keep hearing about how I should add muscle if I want to lose weight. If I'm already overweight, why would I want to keep or build muscle?

First off, let’s start with this exercise. Let’s get that ugly image of the big, veiny, overly-muscular bodybuilder OUT of your head.
Now, replace that picture with the lean, toned body of your choosing - the one you aspire to achieve.That's what will happen when we adD muscle - more specifically, when we add muscle fiber, or their constituent parts, muscle filaments. Filaments are tiny strands, just like the filament in your average light bulb. In order to build a better body, I'm talking about maximizing the number of muscle fiber filaments.

Here’s why.

These tiny strands of muscle each carry a powerful calorie-burning furnace within them. Your body manufactures thousands of these filaments after each productive workout. Now imagine how fast fat would melt off your body if you were adding thousands of these fat burning furnaces each day.

That's exactly what you do when you train with intensity and resistance. (It's also one of the secrets of breaking the dreaded fat loss plateau)

Don’t worry about turning into the Incredible Hulk. These filaments are tiny, so you're not actually growing muscle at a rapid pace, you're just bolstering what's already there by increasing muscle density.

You're simultaneously strengthening your body, increasing your endurance and increasing your metabolism.

Not to mention the "toning" phenomenon that occurs. Because your muscles reshape your body due to the added filaments, you look outstanding and fit as the fat melts off... resulting in the elusive six pack

Remember, as beneficial as cardio activity is to fat loss, strength training can deliver the same benefits and then some!

Proper strength training not only increases your metabolic rate, so you burn more calories each day, it also helps you injury-proof your body and improve your posture and structural integrity so you're not walking around like Quasimodo. It also builds up bone density and helps prevent osteoporosis.

You get the idea.

Back to fat loss...

Strength training can be performed in a myriad number of ways, but to start, I'd suggest bodyweight exercises such as squats, pushups, sit ups, and other exercises that you don’t need a fully-equipped gym for.

I know what you're thinking, "oh no, not that gym class crap!"

Right. Not that gym class crap. Here's the deal.

While your run-of-the-mill PE class may have been fine back in 4th grade when you didn’t exercise anyway, you're not going to get great results with the gym class stuff now.

There are certain rhythms, cadences, forms, rest periods, sequences, tempos and combinations that will make the difference between luke-warm results and blazing fat loss. We present these in our fast fat loss book Black Book of Secrets. The program we provide, as powerful as it is, can be modified easily if you are a beginner.

Here’s a link to the program you can literally do right now. In fact, I insist you stop reading this article and perform the workout. Don’t worry, it’ll still be here when you finish.

Now, the rapid fat loss that occurs in response to strength training is multi-fold. I'm focused on 2 main topics in this article. The first was the addition of muscle filaments, which burn calories on their own.

The second topic is the step before the filaments can be added. These are the actual biochemical and mechanical processes that occur to produce and add the filaments in the first place.

During resistance exercise (which obviously takes energy to perform AKA burning calories) we break down muscle fiber. We cause damage to muscle cells which must be repaired post-workout. In other words,

Muscle is not built during the workout, it's built after the workout.

The rebuilding of the muscle is where new filaments are formed, and this happens after the workout... during the next 24 - 36 hours.

"Repair Mode"

The 24 - 36 hours after the workout are the golden hours where the "city is rebuilt."

The rebuilding process is done through biochemical reactions that burn a lot of calories.

This is where protein comes in. Proteins are the bricks that your muscle filament is built with. Carbohydrate plays a huge role at this point as the cement.

Imagine a house being built on a hot day in July. Dozens of bricklayers out in the sun and sweating. Those are the “workers” in the muscle. Sweating, forming muscle filaments from the protein bricks and adding those filaments to the house…

…and burning calories!

Now imagine what would happen if the workers were to run out of bricks. What happens? The workers sit down, cool off and relax. No more calories burned, no more muscle being built.

How do we make sure we have those bricks to keep the process going? How do we make sure we have enough bricks and cement (of the highest quality) to get the best job done?

How to: Maquette Head Molding and Duplication

In This Article, I'll show you how to cast and duplicate an original head sculpt using some lube, some clay,and an oven. For this you will need.

1:The head or whatever it is your making.
2:Sculpey Brand Sculpey. (Oil & Plastic Based)
3:KY Touch Massage 2-in-1 Warming Oil (water based)

1st,your gonna coat the whole head with some lube. then your gonna squeeze that sculpey stuff onto each half of the model.i did the face first, then the back. Ultimately i only will use the faceplate of the model though.

Once you get it all pressed into place you can start to pull it all off carefully the lube will help it fall right off the model. note: this may only work well with less detailed models

The back of the model falls off easily as this is the smoothest part.You may need some tools i use toothpicks and tweezers to pull at parts of the sculpey.

Hobby Lobby has everything you ever need to make any craft.

But for everyone else i guess just go to Micheal's

When pulling the front off. go slow and careful. The KY warming grease will most likely make the head fall out of the mold.

Work the whole aroudn if you have to and it should pull out of the mold pretty easy.Next you'll pop all yoru mold in the oven and let em bake for 275 Degrees for 15 minutes per 1/4" inch.

I made several casts to get the best one i can. i did at one point have to split the face molds in half to allow then to come out fairly undistorted. if you have question post a comment. or email me if you would just like to send cash in an envelope.

Now just bake and sculpt and paint your casts.

DIY Home Cleaning Formulas

It's funny that you grow up making messes around your house and someone was always there to clean it up. You didn't care who or why.

Then you wake up one day...

You are 30 years old, have kids, and quickly learn that when you are not policing them, you are cleaning up after them. As you sift though the plethora of chemical clad solutions at your disposal, you realize that spraying these things around the house may not be too smart, or cost conscious. I mean, I can go through a $4.00 can of carpet cleaning foam in a weekend!

So first, if you insist on using store-bought cleaners, protect the kids and get some Mr. Yuk stickers. If you are like me and enjoy trying new things that save money and use less chemicals, try some of the tips at Eartheasy. There must be 40 or 50 different ideas at their site, here is a sample:

* All-Purpose Cleaner: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda (or 2 teaspoons borax) into 1/2 gallon (2 liters) water. Store and keep. Use for removal of water deposit stains on shower stall panels, bathroom chrome fixtures, windows, bathroom mirrors, etc.
Another alternative is microfiber cloths which lift off dirt, grease and dust without the need for cleaning chemicals, because they are formulated to penetrate and trap dirt. There are a number of different brands. A good quality cloth can last for several years.

* Disinfectant: Mix 2 teaspoons borax, 4 tablespoons vinegar and 3 cups hot water. For stronger cleaning power add 1/4 teaspoon liquid castile soap. Wipe on with dampened cloth or use non-aerosol spray bottle.

Introduction
So, you go digging through your couch and you find somewhere around $200 in loose change and you REALLY don't want to count all of that yourself. Fortunately, god invented CoinStar to do that for you. Unfortunately, CoinStar charges you somewhere around 9% for its services. This is why you want to learn how to hack a CoinStar. This is a really simple hack, so you won't be seeing too many pictures.
Background
Recently, CoinStar started a campaign where they won't charge you any fee if you turn your coins into iTunes gift cards, Amazon gift cards, or Virgin mobile cards. The machine doesn't actually give you any cards, but rather PINs which can be typed in on the sponsor's site and redeemed for their value. This works because the CoinStar machine has the power of the internets. How to do it This is really quite simple. Follow the directions as usual, but when it asks how you would like your money, make sure to pick the iTunes gift card. After it counts all of your change, the machine will ask you how much of your money you want as a gift card and how much you want as cash. Go ahead and set it all to gift card. Now, before proceeding, you need to find a way to unplug the phone jack from the back of the machine. I'm lucky because the wall phone jack for my local CoinStar is at about shoulder height right next to the machine. Now the poor machine is in quite a pickle. It already has all of your change, and it can't give that back to you. It can't give you an iTunes card either. It could give you cash, but it's not going to lay that 9% fee on because you obviously didn't agree to that when you put your change in the machine. What can it do? Give you cash for FREE. After a few minutes of trying, it will simply give up and just give you a slip which can be redeemed for cash at the store customer service counter.

Downloading "Other OS Installer"

Save the "Other OS Installer" (which is called installer hereafter) to your recording medium using any of the following:

Commercially available memory card reader/writer
Memory card slot of your PC
Disc drive of your PC that allows writing data on the disc you selected

Step１

When using a commercially available memory card reader/writer

Set the recording medium on the memory card reader/writer, and connect the reader/writer to the PC.
See the instruction manual of your memory card reader/writer for details.

When using a memory card slot of PC

Insert the recording medium into the memory card slot of the PC.
See the instruction manual of your PC for details.

When using a disc drive of PC

Insert the recording medium (disc) into the disc drive of the PC.
See the instruction manual of your PC for details.

Step２

Create folders to store the installer and the boot loader on the recording medium.

Using the PC, create a folder named "PS3" (single-byte characters must be used) under the root directory of the recording medium you have prepared.
In the "PS3" folder you have just created, create a folder named "otheros" (single-byte characters must be used).
The "otheros" folder you created in B of step 2 is used to store the installer to be downloaded in step 3 with the name, "otheros.self".

Step３

Download the installer from this site using the PC, and save it in the folder you have created in step 2.

this is a ".self" file

Note!!!!!!!!!

If any of the conditions below is not met, PLAYSTATION®3 cannot recognize the installer in the steps below.

The file has been saved in the "otheros" folder.
The file has been saved with the name "otheros.self".
The folder and/or file name contains no double-byte character.

Step 4

Save the boot loader file on the recording medium.

Obtain the boot loader file for the "Other OS" you want to install from the provider. Then save the boot loader file in the "otheros" folder created in step 2 with the name, "otheros.bld".

Step 5

After saving the boot loader, remove the recording media from the memory card reader/writer, memory card slot, or disc drive, depending on the type of the medium used.

Performing Installation

Notes

The on-screen displays may look slightly different depending on the version of the PLAYSTATION®3's system software and/or the version of the installer. Do not turn off the power or remove the recording medium during the installation. Interrupting the installation process may cause damage.

Step６

Insert the recording medium on which the installer is saved into the card slot or the USB port of PLAYSTATION®3. If the installer has been installed in a recording disc, insert the disk into the disc drive of PLAYSTATION®3.

Step７

Select [Install Other OS] from [System Settings] of [Settings] on the home menu. This initiates a search for the installer and displays its location. Click [OK] to start the installer.

Step８

Perform the installation according to the instructions displayed by the installer. Once the installation completes, The [Default System] menu item appears in [System Settings] of [Settings] on the home menu .

Starting Boot Loader

After you have completed the installation in step 8, specify "Other OS" by selecting menu items in the following order: home menu > [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Default System] > "Other OS". This causes its boot loader to be started every time PLAYSTATION®3 boots up.

For information about the way to switching from the "Other OS" to the PLAYSTATION®3's system software, contact the provider of the "Other OS".

For your information, the PLAYSTATION®3 system software can be forcibly booted up even when an "Other OS" has been selected as ｢Default System」by holding down the Power button for about 5 seconds or more at power on, although this forcible boot resets the screen resolution to the factory default.
